To achieve best results it is recommend to cut only on the forward stroke and not on the return stroke as this will undo any smoothing. Always begin with the largest, coarsest file suitable for the job and work through to the finest, with the option of moving onto a needle file if required.

The coarser the file the more metal is removed. Files are graded as below:
Cut 000 – Very Coarse
Cut 00 – Coarse
Cut 0 – Coarse/Medium
Cut 1 – Medium
Cut 2 – Medium/Fine
Cut 3 – Fine
