The abrasive grain used for the hand block is silicon carbide, which is bonded with plastic. The result is a structure that is more elastic compared to ceramic or synthetic resin bonds. This elasticity keeps roughness at a minimum and ensures that there are next to no changes to the geometry of the workpiece. Another factor of decisive impact on the scratch pattern – besides the abrasive grain – in the bonding. While exceedingly hard, the silicon carbide used is not particularly tough. Its crystalline structure makes the grit sharp-edged, yet brittle. Sensitive to breakage, the material causes micro-wear of the grit. When used for cleaning and finishing, the hand block will therefore remain usable until it is worn out completely. Since made synthetically, the grit is guaranteed to deliver uniform quality and defined characteristics.
