Takefu SG2 Stainless/Nickel Damascus DPS 15 Layer
Size: 38 x 4mm
R1575,01 – R4725,02Price range: R1575,01 through R4725,02
This is a pre-laminated bar featuring an SG2 stainless steel core with a DPS 15 Layer Cladding. This means that a central layer of premium powdered metallurgical SG2 stainless steel, is surrounded by alternating layers of stainless steel and nickel. The nickel acts as a barrier to stop carbon migration. When combined with layers of stainless steel, it creates a particularly dramatic and bold pattern. The linear layers can either be ground to shape or the bar can be forged, allowing for nearly endless patterns – from chevrons, to ladder, pool & eye and more.
SG2 (Super Gold 2) is powdered metallurgical steel with a fine grain structure. SG2 is free from impure substances and achieves good abrasion resistance. The addition of 15% Cr (chromium) provides good corrosion resistance while 2.8% Mo (molybdenum) makes a stronger substrate (matrix) and helps prevent carbides from dropping out of solution during heat treatment. The addition of V (vanadium) creates finer grain. The added Cr, Mo, and V form many hard carbides, so abrasion resistance improves. Fine grain and abrasion resistance gives knives long-term edge holding ability with a very keen, clean, cutting edge. SG2 is easily machinable and is also easy to grind and finish.

Heat Treatment
Forging: Forge at 1100°C/2012°F. Do not forge below 1000°C/1832°F. You should anneal after forging. SG2 can be forged using good forging practice, however when forging on edge, special care should be taken to avoid delaminating.
Annealing: Anneal at 880°C/1616°F. Cooling speed should not exceed 25°C/hr – 77°F/hr
Quenching: Quench at 1050-1100°C/1922-2012°F. Quench in oil (50°C/122°F) or air (25°C/77°F)
Tempering: Temper at 150-250°C (302-482°F). If you coat such as TiC, temper at 550°C/1022°F
Hardness
Annealed: Hrc 30
Hardened: Hrc 62
Sub-Zero: Hrc 62.5
Mastersmith Bill Burke’s Heat Treatment Recommendation: After forging/annealing, grind blade to 220 grit (120 grit minimum) finish. Wrap in high temp stainless foil, being sure to seal air tight. Place blade in heat treat oven and ramp oven to 1560 °F and hold 30 minutes. Ramp oven to 2012°F and hold a maximum of 10 minutes. Air, oil or plate quench. Sub-zero quench at -112°F to -300°F for 60 minutes. Temper two times for two hours each cycle for desired hardness at 300 – 480°F.
